Framed Flies
At Fly Frames we produce frames in a range of sizes and styles.
All flies are presented in shadow mount giving depth between the background, fly and the glass, with each fly is raised from the background to prevent crushing.
In order to keep the prices affordable we source a lot of our frames are preowned, and renovated before use. Where customers have particular requirements or for a matching set we work with a local frame maker.

Frame Types
The images below illustrate a selection of the styles we produce to give an indication of different combinations of frames, mounts and content. As we tie the flies and frame them ourselves we can create a bespoke frame just for you.

Individual frames containing a single classic salmon fly.
Flies are tied on size 2/0 to 6/0 hooks giving an overall length of up to 6cm.
Individual Salmon Flies
This is a size 6/0 Megan Boyd pattern with a triple mount in a 8" x 6" frame

Multiple frames can contain from 2 classic salmon flies tied on size 2/0 to 6/0 hooks.
Multiple Salmon Flies
This example contains 6 flies on size 4/0 hooks replicating Plate 1 of Geo M Kelson's book The Salmon Fly.

Any combination of Salmon, Sea Trout and Trout flies can be incorporated to display a range of patterns
Combination Frame
This example contains a single classic salmon fly on a size 6/0 hook along with 2 modern hairwing flies on size 1 hook, 3 Sea Trout flies on size 6 hook and 4 Trout flies on size 10.

The classic Salmon patterns have fallen out of favour with fishermen being replaced with simpler hairwing patterns.
Modern Hairwing Salmon Flies
These are tied on size 6 low water Salmon singles which will be found in the fly boxes of many anglers today.

Many of the patterns used for Sea Trout remain traditional ones. These can be combined with modern options too.
Traditional Sea Trout Flies
These are tied on size 6 low water Salmon singles which will be found in the fly boxes of many anglers today.

Trout flies are traditionally very small and would be difficult to see in a frame therefore we oversize them. These would be dressed on size 6 or 10 low water salmon hooks.
Trout Flies
This example contains 6 North Country Spider patterns on size 10 low water Salmon hooks.

To add extra impact we can use a printed background showing a river system or just an individual beat with a selection of appropriate flies.
River / Beat Maps
This example shows a section of the River Spey showing the beats and named pools along with 4 traditional Spey patterns.

Alternative printed backgrounds are also used with the fly pattern or perhaps a verse or other text to accompany the files presented.
Added Interest
This example contains a dry fly in size 16 as it would be fished along with its dressing and the enlarged versions on size 10 & 6 hooks.
